Volunteers at Lifeline Ballarat Providing Critical Support
Volunteering with Lifeline Ballarat has been an experience that Jake describes as second-to-none.
With an interest in working in the Mental Health sector, Jake took on a volunteer role with Lifeline answering calls on the 13 11 14 Crisis Support Line.
”As a volunteer, I have gained skills and knowledge, not only for the professional Lifeline setting, but also in a practical life sense. Lifeline Ballarat has provided a hands-on opportunity in a supportive and flexible environment to explore my interests. It has been an inspiring experience”, said Jake.
With all volunteers taking part in nationally-recognised training, Lifeline produces some of the most highly-skilled Crisis Supporters in the country.
“These skills stay with volunteers for the rest of their lives and go beyond the 13 11 14 crisis line, helping build more resilient and supportive communities,” said Michelle MacGillivray, Program Manager at Lifeline Ballarat.
“During the training, volunteers learn about communication, listening, mental health, suicide and self-awareness. The training provides personal and professional benefits for each volunteer and broadly within our community. Many volunteers speak about how they have successfully resolved difficult situations in their own lives by applying the skills learnt from the Lifeline volunteer experience”, added Michelle.
The flexible nature of the volunteering was something that drew Jake to the role.
“With flexible volunteering opportunities available at Lifeline, I can easily accommodate it around my work and life. I would encourage anyone thinking about volunteering at Lifeline to attend the information session. It’s a volunteering experience that gives back in so many ways, not only to the callers but to the volunteer.”
Lifeline Ballarat is holding a volunteer information session on Tuesday 5 February for people interested in providing life saving support for people within their community. Anyone wanting to find out further information on what it means to volunteer for Lifeline Ballarat is encouraged to attend.
